A new double-decker foot overbridge under construction at Madhuban Chowk is set to improve connectivity between Delhi Metro’s Red and Magenta lines while providing pedestrians with a safer way to cross one of northwest Delhi’s busiest intersections.

The ₹9.6-crore project is approximately 60% complete and is scheduled to be finished by 30 November 2026. The Public Works Department is executing the project as part of the wider connectivity improvements associated with Delhi Metro’s Phase IV expansion.

Direct interchange between two Metro lines

The upper level of the structure will function as an enclosed interchange corridor within the Metro’s paid area. Measuring approximately 183 metres, it will connect the existing Red Line station with the newly operational Magenta Line station.

Once opened, passengers will be able to transfer between the two lines without leaving the Metro system or crossing the road at street level.

At present, commuters must exit one station, travel more than 250 metres and cross a heavily trafficked road to reach the other. The new elevated connection is expected to make transfers faster, safer and more convenient.

Separate route for pedestrians

The lower level has been planned as a public foot overbridge for pedestrians. It will include a 185-metre section along Rithala Road and an additional arm extending nearly 64 metres along Outer Ring Road.

This level will provide a grade-separated crossing at Madhuban Chowk and improve pedestrian access to the Rohini Court complex and surrounding areas. By keeping everyday pedestrian movement separate from Metro passenger transfers, the double-decker design is expected to reduce crowding and improve movement across the junction.

Lift and escalator connectivity

Both levels of the foot overbridge will integrate with the Metro station buildings, where lifts and escalators will support passenger movement between different levels.

The vertical-transportation systems will be particularly important for senior citizens, passengers with disabilities, families travelling with children and commuters carrying luggage. Their inclusion will also help create a more accessible route between the Red Line, Magenta Line and nearby public areas.

Each level of the structure will be approximately six metres wide, providing sufficient space to manage passenger and pedestrian traffic during busy periods.

Heavy steel structure for a busy interchange

The interconnected structure is being assembled using pre-engineered heavy steel components. Approximately 650 metric tonnes of structural steel and more than 30,000 bolts are being used in its construction.

Much of the installation work is reportedly being undertaken during late-night hours to limit disruption to traffic at Madhuban Chowk, a major junction connecting Rithala Road and Outer Ring Road.

Supporting Delhi Metro’s Phase IV expansion

Madhuban Chowk became an interchange station after the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park section of the Magenta Line extension was inaugurated on 8 March 2026. The section forms part of the Janakpuri West–R.K. Ashram Marg corridor, which is expected to open in stages during the 2026–27 financial year.

The foot overbridge will strengthen the interchange by connecting the two station buildings more directly. It is also expected to improve last-mile accessibility and encourage more people to use the Metro and other forms of public transport.

When completed, the Madhuban Chowk skywalk will demonstrate how elevators, escalators and thoughtfully designed pedestrian infrastructure can work together to make high-traffic urban interchanges safer, more accessible and easier to navigate.
